The decision by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) to more strictly regulate over-the-top (OTT) services comes as a welcome move for those who want to see these companies pay their dues. The NBTC announced that all major OTTs in Thailand will be required to establish country offices and pay local corporate taxes. While the NBTC has stated its intention to tighten its management of OTT services, it has yet to put forward a clear plan. One positive takeaway from the latest NBTC move is the fact it has publicly acknowledged that many of these OTT services offer worthy creative content. It must also ensure that these regulations are not used as tools for authorities to track down politically-active social media pages and OTT broadcasters.
